The Road towards the Internet of Batteryless Things

Tuesday 3 December, 12h00-19h00
@ imec – Leuven

In this workshop we will address recent technology innovations for the road towards a wireless network of batteryless IoT devices. These devices store energy in small capacitors, continuously replenishing their energy using sustainable energy harvesting. Batteryless IoT devices will be environmentally friendly, live longer, and come with reduced maintenance cost since replacing and disposing of batteries can be avoided.

The workshop includes presentations and (live) demos, and is accessible to all enthusiasts in wireless technology. Topics include a.o.

  • (hybrid) energy harvesting
  • wireless power transfer
  • energy-efficient wireless networking
  • energy-aware computing
  • applications

  PART III – WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY
16h10 Strategies for integrating batteryless devices in networks
Eli De Poorter, Professor, imec-IDLab-UGent

Sensor nodes that use batteryless energy harvesters offer an interesting alternative for long term deployment of sensors. However, these energy harvesters, equipped with supercapacitors instead of batteries, suffer from intermittent on-off behavior due to their limited energy storage capacity. This presentation discusses if such devices can still be part of industrial IoT networks such as WirelesHART, ISA100.11a or 6TiSCH.

  • Open issues and challenges with the current proposal

16h35 Ultra low power wireless networking in industrial environments
Nelson Matthys, Co-Founder & CEO, VersaSense

Industrial environments pose unique challenges for IoT networking, particularly when it comes to balancing energy efficiency, reliability, and scalability. This presentation explores how VersaSense leverages ultra-low-power wireless technologies to unlock new possibilities for monitoring previously unconnected industrial assets. Drawing on real-world examples from the manufacturing industry, insights and experiences will highlight how these solutions deliver specific monitoring intelligence while overcoming the constraints of harsh industrial settings.

PART IV – ULTRA LOW POWER COMPUTING
16h50 On-device machine learning for (batteryless) IoT devices
Eli De Poorter, Professor, imec-IDLab-UGent

Due to the unpredictable and dynamic harvesting environment, successfully running tinyML on the microcontroller of batteryless devices is still challenging. This presentation provides strategies for machine learning solutions to be compatible with energy-constrained IoT devices, and outlines future innovations that allow machine learning inference on constrained embedded devices.
