SMIT stands for Studies on Media, Information and Telecommunication. This research centre, founded in 1990 at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, is part of iMinds. SMIT specialises in social scientific research on media and ICT, with an emphasis on innovation, policy and socio-economic questions. Over the years, three methodologies have become the core of SMIT’s research agenda: User analysis, encompassing; Policy analysis and business modelling. SMIT is involved in different projects in the domain of (mobile) wireless communication.
ETRO, the Department of Electronics and Informatics of the Vrije Universiteit Brussels has a longstanding expertise in the field of multimedia representation and communication. Besides fundamental and strategic/applied basic research in this domain, ETRO is also active in standardization bodies such as JPEG and MPEG. ETRO is affiliated with strategic research institutes such as iMinds and imec.
