Wireless Standards – Enabler of IoT Connectivity

Speaker: Yan Zhang

Yan Zhang joined Imec-nl in 2008 after she got her Ph.D, and now she is a senior
researcher. She worked on proprietary Event-driven radio for system and DBB design at
the beginning. And then she also spent some time to participate in the standardization
of 15.6. Recently, she worked on the PAN radio (BLE and 15.4 compliant radio) system and
DBB design. She also leads a few time boxes to carry out extensive study for new project
proposals.

Abstract:

Cisco predicted that by 2020 there will be 50 billion devices connected to the Internet in the context of Internet of Things (IoT). With distributed sensor nodes, huge amount of data are to be collected, transferred and computed in order to derive useful information. Wireless communication becomes a significant component in such a system.

Given that the majority of these devices will be powered by batteries, wireless communication should be of low cost and low power, along with the reliability and security requirements.  Different standardization entities are working actively to come up with a good solution. In this presentation, we will give an overview of the standardization progress, and particularly we will give examples of low power radio design in Imec-nl in such a context.
